It is now the time of year for people to be outside, enjoying nice cool fall weather and spending time with family. For one local group being outside takes on a whole new meaning. Meet the Midwest Outdoor Adventure Association (MOAA). They are a small group of individuals who believe that being out of doors is an essential piece of overall well being.
Carol Kellison, founder of the group, is a Certified Outdoor Adventure leader and Wilderness First Responder. Her resume is filled with commendations from Southeast Missouri University and she is currently employed by the state of Missouri as a Youth Specialist under the Division of Youth Services.
The Association was formed as a way to try and help families who could not afford equipment to go camping or exploring and to get kids and families interested in just being outside again.
“I don’t think that there is enough emphasis on family time anymore,” she said. “I don’t think children get outside enough and explore. Allowing them to explore just in their backyard is very important to their development and growing process.”
The MOAA leads men’s, women’s and coed groups out of doors for guided hikes, canoeing and overnight camping trips to beautiful locations in and around the southeast Missouri area.
The MOAA also believe in helping to better the workplace by assisting companies or groups into the wild to provide “group builders” believing this fosters better relationships within the workplace.
The group consists of members who are certified Outdoor Adventure Leadership, who have obtained college degrees in Parks and Recreation, Biology degrees, and some who are Wilderness First Responders that include Wilderness Advance First Aid certification. Needless to say this group is ready to tackle any terrain.
“I cannot explain the healing that I have done emotionally, mentally and physically from the time I have spent outdoors,” she said. An overnight trail trip is planned for this Friday at Hawn State Park. The group will pitch camp in the afternoon to rest up, then gear up mid-morning on Saturday for the full 10 mile hike across the park.
